How To Clean Your Facial Steamer 101
Ah, facial steamers… an esty’s best friend. Facial steamers are a NECESSITY in my treatment room. I love all of the skin benefits and the experience it gives to my clients… BUT don’t get it twisted, there is routine maintenance involved.
If you’ve got a facial steamer in your spa or you’re thinking of getting one, it’s critical to always make sure it’s cleaned and maintained properly. Facial skin is one of the most sensitive parts of the body and if your facial steamer is unsanitary, it’ll result in more harm than good for your clients… which we don’t want.
“Okay Kasey, I get it. So, what are your top tips for cleaning your facial steamer?” You asked and I’m answering! I’m going to share my 5 steps with you on how I clean my facial steamer on the regular and some of my favorite steamer accessories too.
Cleaning your facial steamer 101
Step #1: Fill the steamer with fresh DISTILLED water!
Whenever possible, opt to use distilled water when cleaning your steamer. This is because distilled water is filtered and it’s purified, which will be much safer for your steamer and better for your client’s skin. Tap water can actually damage the facial steamer because of its minerals and harsh chemicals. Here in LA, the tap is so bad and it can corrode the steamer, so only use tap if you’re in a pinch.
Step #2: Rinse the steamer basin at the end of each day.
At the end of every day, you’ll want to empty and rinse the water out of your steamer basin and allow it to dry overnight.
Step #3: Don’t leave herbs or oils overnight!
Leaving anything in your steamer overnight when you’re not actively using it is never a good idea. Everything should be prepped and ready for your clients the day of to keep things fresh and as sanitary as possible.
Step #4: On top of daily maintenance, do a deep clean once a month!
At the end of each month, it’s time for a DEEP clean. Use one cap of white vinegar with distilled water and let it run all the way (KB tip: do this at the END of the day or on a day you don’t have any clients, the smell of the white vinegar isn’t gonna give off the spa vibe scent you are going for). Once you ran the white vinegar and distilled water through, run it once more with the distilled water.
Step #5: The grand finale!
Wipe down your steamer at the end of each day with barbicide wipes or clorox wipes.
